the place of sound: a new radio show + podcast on CKCU

somehow, during the madness that was the 2020-21 school year, i managed to launch a new radio show/podcast on CKCU, Carleton University’s campus radio station. the show is called “the place of sound” and it features work produced by students in my 4th year workshop, digital media production.

throughout the course, students produce a series of audio media productions: audio portraits (oral history style vignettes), soundscape compositions, and audio documentaries. and each of these projects in some way relates to the relationship between sound and place: audio portraits are interviews on the topic of home, soundscape compositions explore the meaning of a given place, and audio documentaries think spatially about one’s own family history.

episodes consist of this work, and each one is roughly 25-30 minutes in duration. typically, three to five projects comprise an episode, which i host myself. the show airs every other monday at 6:30pm EST on CKCU, and episodes can be listened to on both CKCUfm.com and on the project’s website, www.theplaceofsound.ca.

in addition to the audio productions, students also create portfolio websites that consist of their own smartphone photography and written content. the place of sound website functions as a hub for all of this audiovisual content, and it links to student work based on the semester in which it was produced.

if you have a moment, feel free to have a poke around the website and leave us a note about what you think. or better yet, tune in to the next episode of the show!
