welcome to my online classroom: a teaching workshop for Carleton’s EDC

in december of 2020, i led a “welcome to my online classroom” workshop for carleton university’s educational development centre (EDC). “welcome to my online classroom” is a monthly workshop series where faculty from across the university share approaches to course delivery in the context of online teaching. workshops are preceded by a short video made by the instructor that walk potential workshop participants (or anyone with a general interest in online teaching) through one’s general approach.

the video that outlines my take on online teaching is found here. in it, i describe how i make use of both a ‘talking head’ style video (which you see in the thumbnail) and screencasting, which i use for content delivery. the course i make use of as an example is COMS 1001: foundations in communication and media studies, the introductory course in the communication and media studies program.

i also take the time to walk viewers through what all of this looks like in cuLearn: the learning management system that Carleton University was using at the time i made the video (it’s since been moved to Brightspace).

the video comes off as somewhat overproduced, but most of what makes it look and sound that way is a very modest bit of editing and audio eq’ing. and i did so using very accessible software: imovie and garageband, both of which are free with any apple computer (surely there are PC equivalents).

if you happen to have any questions about this video or online teaching in general, feel free to be in touch!
